The US healthcare system is rampant with racism, and is a direct reflection of the structural, systemic, and institutional racism embedded in the fabric of American society. As Audre Lorde said, “For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us to temporarily beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.” We will never find healing and experience true health with the US Healthcare system. It is a system that has created and perpetuated a vicious cycle that keeps them rich and us sick. The US Healthcare system is worth over 4 trillion dollars and we continue to experience a decline in health and premature death.
The Standard American Diet
The cycle begins with the consumption of the Standard American Diet (SAD). The Standard American Diet is defined as the diet that has been adopted by western society. This diet is rich in meat and sweets and lacks the nutritional balance that leads to health. A Documentary entitled, Forks Over Knives describes the Standard American Diet as the following:
- 63% of America’s calories come from refined and processed foods (e.g., soft drinks, packaged snacks like potato chips, packaged desserts, etc.)
- 25% of America’s calories come from animal-based foods
- 12% of America’s calories come from plant-based foods
Unfortunately, half of the plant-based calories (6%) come from French fries. That means only 6% of America’s calories are coming from health-promoting fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
We eat a diet rich in meat and sweets and then develop chronic disease. We go to the doctor and he or she prescribes medication. We go to the pharmacy, take the medication, and slowly deteriorate from the side effects of the medicine prescribed. We continue to eat the standard American diet and the cycle continues until we are only a shell of the man or woman we were.
We can break this cycle by becoming our own healers and leveraging the power of Intermittent Fasting and African Holistic Health.
